Thankfully, we have beacons like Yue Zhao help us reframe decisions about our skills, traits, and career choices. In today’s Product Leader Summit Virtual Speaker Series session she did exactly that.

Your brand = what other people say you’re great at

What would other people—whether its your manager, your peers, your coach, your customers—say you’re great at when you’re not around? Are they able to accurately and convincingly articulate what makes you better than everybody else?

If yes, that’s your superpower. That’s your brand.

It’s not just about your title or role.

Your superpower = your leverage

Knowing what you’re good at gives you leverage to deliver more with less. You perform at your best when your work aligns with your superpowers.

Narrowing your focus—especially on work that stretches you—to your personal superpowers will help you reinforce the brand. Make sure as much of the work you do is aligned with that.

How do you recognize your superpower?

  • What gives you energy?

  • What do people ask you for help on?

  • What do expert third parties—like your manager, peers, or career coach—say you excel at compared to others?

Map out how your leadership traits align with your strengths and identify areas for growth.

Consider these common Product leader archetypes—which one resonates with you? What is the context or environment that values your superpower?

  • The Team Builder

  • The Visionary Leader

  • The Turnaround Guru

  • The Operator
